All Wrapped Up

“The note was in his pants pocket,” Deputy Hardin said.

Jessie looked at the man. Compared to the sheriff, he at least looked remorseful. “Can we see it? Or am I just supposed to take your word for the contents?”

Hardin snuck a look over at the sheriff, who was supervising the removal of the body. “Fine. But only to put your mind at rest.”

Yeah. Good luck with that.

The deputy had a black, police-issued duffle bag emblazoned with the words ‘EVIDENCE’ printed in yellow lettering, slung obliquely across his shoulder. Opening it, he produced a sealed Ziploc bag with a piece of yellow legal pad paper sealed inside.

Alex moved to stand next to Jessie, reading the handwritten note over her shoulder.

I’m sorry. I’m so deeply sorry for what I’ve done and for the pain I know my actions will cause. I can no longer live with the guilt and the weight of my sins. It’s a burden too heavy to bear, and I fear it will crush me if I continue on.

First, George, please know that none of this is your fault. You have been the one pure thing I’ve ever known. I’m sorry I won’t be there to protect you anymore, to be the brother you deserve. But I hope, in time, you’ll come to understand why I had to do this.

I need to confess my crime. One that has haunted my every waking moment since that fateful day. I killed Marley Shaffer. I didn’t mean for it to happen. She meant everything to me and if she had given me the chance, I could have made her the happiest woman in the world. But when she told me she didn’t, and could never feel the same way about me, I broke. The darkness rushed in and I snapped. It was over before I even realized what I had done. I took her life. And in doing so, damned my own.

There is no atonement for what I’ve done. No number of good deeds can wash the blood from my hands.

Tell Marley’s family I am sorry for what I did. I hope they can find some measure of peace in knowing that her killer has been brought to justice. Even if that justice was delivered by my own hand.

And George. I need you to be strong. I’m sorry I couldn’t be the brother you needed me to be.

The letter was signed in a scrawl that Jessie assumed was Kerry’s signature. She read over the note twice more before handing it back to Deputy Hardin.

Sheriff Cormac walked up just as she finished reading. “You see, in his own words, Kerry admitted to the horrific act he committed.”

Jessie chose her next words carefully. “And you’re sure that’s his signature on it? Interesting how this just wraps everything up in a neat little package and puts a bow on top.” She felt the heat radiate from the sheriff as he drew in breath.

“Miss, I don’t know how you do things in your neck of the woods and, honestly, I don’t much care.
